Fort Aguada - History details
Built by the Portuguese in 1612, Fort Aguada crowns the Sinquerim headland at the mouth of the Mandovi, guarding Goa’s coast and shipping lanes. A freshwater spring inside gave the fort its name (Aguada = water) and supplied passing ships; Asia’s old 1864 lighthouse still stands uphill. Overlooking the Arabian Sea and Candolim–Sinquerim beaches, it later served as a jail; Goa Liberation is commemorated locally every 19 December.
