Basilica Of Bom Jesus - History details
In Old Goa (Velha Goa), this UNESCO-listed basilica was begun in 1594 and consecrated in 1605, a landmark of Baroque and Portuguese colonial art. It enshrines the relics of St Francis Xavier (d. 1552), displayed to pilgrims once every decade; his feast is on 3 December. Set amid the former capital’s church ensemble on the Mandovi plain, the façade and gilded interiors narrate Goa’s Jesuit story.
