Chapora Fort - History details

Perched above the Chapora River and Vagator cliffs, this red‑laterite fort was rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1617 on an older Adil Shahi site. It saw Maratha contests (notably 1683 and 1739) and was abandoned in 1892. Today its ramparts frame panoramic Arabian Sea views and famous Vagator sunsets; pop culture revived it as the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ fort.
