Adil Shah Palace Gateway, Old Goa - History details

This freestanding basalt doorway is all that remains of Yusuf Adil Shah’s 16th‑century palace at Old Goa, once adapted by the Portuguese and later dismantled (materials reused in Panaji). Set near St Cajetan, the arch recalls Goa’s pre‑Portuguese Islamic court and the 1510 Portuguese conquest by Afonso de Albuquerque. Interesting: the site is popularly linked—often mistakenly—to Inquisition lore. Visit year‑round; winter light suits photographs.
