Maithon Dam ( Barakar River ) - History details

Large Damodar Valley Corporation dam on the Barakar River near the Jharkhand–West Bengal border; construction 1953–1957 with inauguration in 1957. The 4,789‑m long, 50‑m high structure created 65 km² Maithon Lake and houses South‑East Asia’s first underground hydel power station (≈60 MW). Located about 48 km from Dhanbad and ~25 km from Asansol; popular for picnics and boating.
