Adalaj Stepwell - History details

Built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai, this five‑storey octagonal stepwell features Indo‑Islamic carvings and cooling subterranean corridors. Located north of Ahmedabad along ancient trade routes, it was a vital water source in semi‑arid Gujarat. Its shafts create temperature drops even in peak summer. Special dates: heritage walks are common on World Heritage Day (18 April).
