India’s oldest bird sanctuary, Vedanthangal spans 74 acres and was established in 1798. Situated in Madurantakam taluk, it attracts over 40,000 migratory birds annually, including pelicans and storks. Historically, locals protected the wetland for its guano-enriched water aiding agriculture. Geographically, it’s a mosaic of lakes and scrub forests at 122 meters elevation, offering a unique blend of biodiversity and cultural conservation.
