Sun Temple, Konark - History details
Commissioned by Narasingha Deva I around 1250 CE, Konark’s Sun Temple rises near the Bay of Bengal northeast of Puri. Geography: sandy littoral belt flanking the Subarnarekha–Mahanadi coastal tract. Interesting facts: the temple’s chariot plan shows 24 stone wheels and once soared above 200 ft; sailors called it the ‘Black Pagoda’; it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1984).
