Pothundy Dam - History details

Constructed in the 19th century using jaggery and quicklime, Pothundy Dam in Palakkad is among India’s oldest dams. Set at the foothills of the Nelliampathy range, its reservoir spans forested catchments and supports a major irrigation scheme completed in 1971. The site hosts the Nenmara‑Vallangi Vela festival annually and offers scenic views, gardens and hill‑route access toward Nelliampathy.
