Potagada - History details
Potagada (‘buried fort’) near Chhatrapur was expanded in 1768 under British Resident Edward Costford at the Rushikulya river mouth. A star‑shaped enceinte, deep moat and twin riverward passages reflect layered control by Kutabshahi, French and British powers; it served as Ganjam’s first Collectorate before shifts to Berhampur (1815) and Chhatrapur (1835). Its low‑lying layout and sea link shaped both defense and escape legends.
