Raised in the early 18th c. by Somashekara Nayaka of the Keladi (Ikkeri) Nayakas, Hosdurg (Puthiyakotta) guarded trade routes around Kanhangad. Geography: laterite fort on a low hill with round bastions; a watch‑tower surveys coast and town. Interesting: links to nearby Nithyananda caves and a Nayaka‑era Shiva shrine (Karpooreswara).
