Sacred Heart Cathedral, Shivamogga - History details

Parish roots date to 1847; a new church was built and blessed on Apr 4, 1875. As Catholic numbers grew, an extension opened in 1976. On Nov 14, 1988, it gained Cathedral status with the erection of the Diocese of Shimoga; the present vast Roman‑Gothic structure (prayer hall ~5,000 capacity) was dedicated Jan 31, 1998.
