Formerly Madathumala, Ranipuram (≈750–1022 m) on the Kerala–Karnataka border is dubbed the ‘Ooty of Kerala’. Trekking from Panathady leads through shola grasslands, where lemongrass scents the breeze; meadows and wildlife (elephants, hornbills) are reported. DTPC cottages serve visitors; best season Oct–Mar; regular buses/jeeps from Kanhangad/Panathady.
