Kolar Gold Fields - History details

Kolar Gold Fields, headquartered at Robertsonpet in Kolar district, flourished under John Taylor & Sons from 1880 onward. Its Champion shaft descended nearly 3,200 meters, making it one of the deepest mines globally. Nationalized in 1956, the mines were officially closed on February 28, 2001. The region also hosted early power generation in 1889 and notable underground physics experiments during the mid‑twentieth century.
