Laid out as the French ‘Ville Blanche’ in the 18th–19th centuries, White Town (French Quarter) borders Goubert Avenue on the Bay of Bengal and preserves pastel villas, baroque/neoclassical facades and French street names. After de facto transfer in 1954, the quarter remained the colony’s cultural core. Must‑see landmarks include the Promenade, French War Memorial and Our Lady of Angels. Best explored Oct–Mar; evenings are vehicle‑free on the seafront.
