Pillalamarri Banyan Tree - History details
Pillalamarri, an 800-year-old banyan tree near Mahabubnagar, spreads across 3-4 acres. Believed to date back to the 13th century, it has countless aerial roots forming a vast canopy. The site also houses the relocated 16th-century Sri Rajarajeswara Temple and tombs of Sufi saints, adding cultural depth to its natural grandeur. Known as 'Children’s Banyan', Pillalamarri can shelter thousands under its green umbrella. It is among India’s largest banyan trees and features a science museum, deer park, and mini zoo. Conservation efforts are ongoing due to termite infestations and aging, making it a unique blend of ecology and heritage.
