Moti Daman Fort - History details

Begun in 1559 and completed in 1581 under Portuguese rule, Moti Daman Fort encloses ~30,000 sq m of bastions, gateways and civic buildings including the Cathedral of Bom Jesus and the Old Lighthouse. Set on the south bank of the Daman Ganga estuary, its ramparts overlook the Arabian Sea. Interesting fact: inscriptions date the south gate to 1581 and the north seaward works to 1593; evenings bring superb estuary sunsets.
