Key Monastery ( Spiti ) - History details

Spiti’s largest gompa rises at 4,166 m above the Spiti River near Kaza. Traditionally credited to Dromtön (11th c.), Key has weathered Mongol raids, Dogra attacks (1841), fires, and the 1975 earthquake, then restored by ASI. A living Gelug seat and study centre for hundreds of monks, it received a new prayer hall blessed by the Dalai Lama in 2000.
