Diu Island - History details
Held by the Portuguese from 1535 until liberation in Operation Vijay on 18–19 December 1961, compact Diu Island (~40 sq km) lies off Gujarat’s south coast, linked by bridges over a tidal creek. Its sandstone fort, Baroque churches and fishing villages meet palm-lined coves and mangroves. Interesting fact: the IAF mounted a one‑day action at Diu during the 1961 campaign; Goa Liberation Day is observed on 19 December each year.
