Perched at 2,460 m on Mathan Hill above Kullu, Bijli Mahadev overlooks the Beas–Parvati valleys. Local lore says lightning periodically shatters the Shiva lingam, after which priests rejoin it with butter and sattoo—a rite that inspires the name ‘Bijli’ (lightning). The short, steep 3 km approach from Chansari is busiest around Mahashivratri and in seasons after notable strikes.
