Arikamedu ( Ancient Indo‑Roman Port ) - History details

On the Ariyankuppam River bend 4 km south of Pondicherry, Arikamedu was identified with the Poduke emporium of the Periplus; major excavations by Sir Mortimer Wheeler (1945) and J.-M. Casal (1947–50) exposed Roman amphorae/Arretine ware and prolific bead‑making. Later work (Vimala Begley, 1989–92) extended occupation to 2nd BCE–8th CE. Now an ASI site, it’s a quiet ruin with vast trade heritage.
