Arikamedu - History details
An archaeological port (identified with ancient Podouke) on the Ariyankuppam River near Puducherry. Excavations by Sir Mortimer Wheeler (1945) and J.-M. Casal (1947–50) yielded Roman amphorae, Arretine ware, lamps and beads, evidencing Indo‑Roman trade from the late 1st century BCE into the early centuries CE; later scholarship extends occupation from the 2nd century BCE to 8th century CE.
