Aayi Mandapam - History details
This ivory‑white pavilion at the heart of Bharathi Park was erected in 1854 during Napoleon III’s reign to honor Aayi, a courtesan whose freshwater tank aided the French settlement’s water supply. French engineer Pierre‑Eugène Lamairesse later channelled the tank’s water to White Town. The Greco‑Roman mandapam with Corinthian columns is Pondicherry’s emblem; the park hosts civic events through the cooler months.
